About 17 years ago, a dear spiritual son bought a gift for my then prepubescent daughter. It was the book box set of The Complete Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. As neither my daughter nor I were aware that we were in possession of a modern classic, we treated the gift with the neglect that ignorance breeds and it gathered dust on my bookshelf for about eight years. The release of the film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in December 2005 brought it back to focus. My daughter, by now in her late teens watched the film and could not recommend it to me highly enough.I, however do not like to watch the movie adaptations of books till I have read the books.
I therefore proceeded to read the complete chronicles. For the next few days, I was so engrossed, I could think of nothing else. All my spare time and many a late night was spent greedily devouring this modern day parable as I saw it. Being very Christocentric in my orientation, Aslan the lion-king, the warrior with a tender shepherd’s heart, left an indelible impact on me. This is because he was so obviously a type of Christ. The conflict with the witch at the Stone Table and his cruel assassination all took me back to Gethsemane and Calvary. His resurrection the next day was the not unpredictable crowning glory. For days and weeks after this, I could think of nothing but Aslan.
About this time, I had consulted my legal adviser to register a company for me for my future aspirations as a writer and publisher. He came back to tell me all was set and the only thing left to do was choose a name. Not unexpectedly, there was only one name resonating in my mind-Aslan. Thus Aslan Associates Limited was born.
The fairly sudden and somewhat unexpected conclusion of my previous pastoral assignment meant that my ministry had to continue under the aegis of a different nomenclature. Once again, the majesty, regality but most of all the subtle appeal of the servant-king, Aslan suffused my heart. It has already been explained where the acronym L.I.F.E. emanated from. There can be no life without the Prince of life (Acts3:15) who came that we may have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). L.I.F.E. Ministries would be nothing without our heavenly Aslan for as He so rightly said, “Without me, you can do nothing”(John 15:5). Thus Aslan L.I.F.E. Ministries was born.
